The above FTP server sequence does work for OS X and OS X Server, if the network connection is available. Test the FTP server from another computer on the Wi-Fi. I would not roam networks with FTP enabled.

If you're going to use this off of your network and if you don't mind having your Mac filed with "warz" and illicit photos and other junk when your username and password are acquired from a camera transfer that gets sniffed, and if you don't mind shutting off your intervening firewall, then there are instructions which should probably work through at least 10.10 posted around the 'net. Hopefully they've remedied that omission on their current equipment.

sftp is also far easier to get working around firewalls, too. Some of the older Canon gear apparently does not support modern, secure, encrypted file transfers such as sftp. Somebody at Canon is apparently unaware of or has discounted your computer security, through the use a protocol that's wildly insecure and that leaks your username and password to anybody with a privileged network position (coffee shop or hotel networks, etc), and a protocol that's a serious hassle to get working around modern network security around firewalls.
